Youth Programs
A Youth Program designed
especially for youth between the ages of 11 and 17 that provides
fun-filled days of wilderness education and adventure, with
the added advantage of giving Moms and Dads “free time” during
the day to do their own exploring or just take a well-deserved
break.
The day will
start after breakfast and depending on the age
range and group size, day programs may include environmental
stewardship activities, outdoor recreation (swimming, tubing,
Disc Golf), outdoor
adventure (climbing, hiking), indigenous survival and ancient skills (Fire from friction, shelter making, edible plants, navigation)..
For example,
one day may begin with a nature walk through the Lodge ’s
15 acres of riparian land, old growth cedar groves, fish ponds
and beaver ponds to the mighty Methow River. Along the
way youth will be introduced to their surroundings from a naturalist,
environmental and indigenous perspective. They will learn about
the names of the local plants, animals, learn of the environmental
concerns for the area and practice some indigenous survival
techniques, including land navigation and creating fire from
friction.
Another day
may begin with a short trip (½ mile) to Fun
Rock or Goat Wall for instruction on rock climbing. Youth will
learn the basics of putting on a harness, knot tying, belaying,
climbing and safety. Groups may also travel to the North Cascades
National Park for a long day hike into the wilderness to an
alpine lake, waterfall, glacier or vista.
Each day will
conclude with a cold splash back at the Lodge ’s
swimming pond!!!
The trips are flexible and will depend on age, numbers and experience
of the group.
